KS3 Drama:

Students receive one lesson of Drama per week throughout their time in KS3. The curriculum is designed to gradually develop and build up their skills in the subject. Once students have a basic grasp of Drama skills, these are then applied to a range of topics and stimulus. Topics studied during KS3 include theatrical and film genres, social issues, fictional stories, and theatre plays.


Assessment in the subject is broken down into three areas;

  • Making – Exploring, devising, shaping and interpreting Drama. Including selecting and applying the appropriate skills and techniques to create performance work.
  • Performing –Presenting and producing performance work. Including creating believable characters and utilising varying skills and techniques during performance.
  • Responding – Evaluating work and techniques and applying knowledge and understanding.


GCSE Drama:

If students opt to study GCSE Drama they will have the opportunity to further develop the skills acquired from KS3, but in far more depth. The GCSE Drama curriculum equips students with the skills to develop as versatile performers and explore a further range of techniques and devices to create effective theatre.


Assessment is broken down into three units;

  • From Page to Stage – Students will study and explore a play through a range of practical based workshops. Students will then be expected to select an extract from the play to stage for examination. A working record is produced to document and evaluate progress.
  • Drama in the Making – Through a range of practical workshops and research tasks, students will explore a stimulus. They are then encouraged to create original performances using the given stimulus as inspiration. Three small-scale pieces of work are then created for assessment. A working record is produced to document and evaluate progress.
  • From Concept to Creation – Students are expected to utilise the skills they have developed over the two years to create a full-length original piece of theatre. Students will respond to a stimulus set by the exam board and will be assessed by an external examiner. A working record is also produced to document progress.


A Level Drama & Theatre Studies:

The course combines the activities of exploring a variety of plays, both classic and contemporary, creating theatre, performing plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all these elements. If you complete the course you will have a thorough understanding of Drama and Theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.


The course is broken down into four units;

  • (AS) Exploration of Drama & Theatre – Students will explore two contrasting plays practically and two theatre practitioners. A set of exploration notes detailing their findings and comparisons is produced for assessment. Students will also experience a piece of live theatre and produce an assessed review of the performance.
  • (AS) Theatre Text in Performance –Students will develop their performance skills and will ultimately rehearse an individual monologue. They will also take on a role in a group performance of a full-scale contemporary play. These performances are assessed by an external examiner.
  • (A2) Exploration of Dramatic Performance – Students will develop their devising skills and will work towards creating an original piece of theatre from a given stimulus. Students are assessed on their contribution of the creative process, their final performance and their evaluation of the piece.
  • (A2) Theatre Text in Context – Students will study a text through a series of research tasks, presentations and practical workshops. The role of a director will be explored and eventually students will develop their own vision and concept for the play. A written examination at the end of the year allows students to explain and justify their individual approach to the text.


Extra-curricular opportunities:

There are many opportunities for students to develop their performance skills and experience theatre outside of the curriculum. We encourage students of all ages to get involved with as much as they can.


  • Performing Arts Showcase EveningsThree showcase evenings take place each year, allowing students to present work they have been developing in the classroom and any additional performances that may have developed as a result of extra-curricular activities.
  • KS3 Drama ClubDrama club allows the younger years to work with our more experienced students to create work, all KS3 students are welcome.
  • Special eventsStudents are invited to create and present work for various events throughout the year such as ‘Remembrance Day’ and ‘Anti-bullying week’.
  • Theatre TripsA range of theatre trips for all key stages are offered throughout the year, including trips to regional theatres and productions in London.
  • Whole School ProductionsFull-scale productions are staged every two years; all students are invited to take part. Previous productions include ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ (2005) ‘Oliver!’ (2008) ‘Back to the 80’s’(2010) We Will Rock You’ (2012)  'Our House' (2014) and 'Billy Elliott' (2016)
  • Annual London Drama ResidentialEach year GCSE and A Level Drama students are offered the opportunity to experience a range of live theatre, workshops and backstage tours in London
