We aim to provide our students with the skills that will enable them to communicate with others throughout their lives, to inspire them to explore and challenge ideas from literature, film and the world of modern media. 

English develops the skills in written communication that will enable students to be active and productive members of their communities and develop their own creativity.

Through speaking and listening, students learn to communicate in a variety of contexts, both directly applicable to the world outside the classroom and in a dramatic arena. 

Creative, challenging and thought provoking teaching modules develop higher order thinking skills essential to lifelong learning. 

English promotes students’ understanding of the world around them and their cultural history and supports emotional understanding of themselves and others.

English is one of the core subjects in the curriculum and one which makes up the new English Baccalaureate. GCSE English is valued by employers, colleges and training providers as a benchmark qualification, with which students can access further opportunities beyond school. 

Sets and groups

In year 7, students begin their studies in mixed ability groups, completing a year 6 to year 7 bridging unit and a series of assessments, from which they are regrouped to provide three teaching groups per pair of timetabled classes. This promotes stretch and challenge for the more able and provides small group intervention for those requiring additional support with literacy.

In year 8 there are five sets, to enable all learners to progress within groups of similar ability and to provide smaller class sizes for students who need more support. This pattern is repeated in year 9. All groups are flexible and resetting of students continues throughout the year as they progress.

Curriculum requirements

At key stage 3, students follow the new key stage 3 curriculum requirements. In addition, year 9 students follow a programme of study which prepares them for the rigours of the new GCSEs, including covering some of the set texts at GCSE to ensure that they have sufficient time to embed learning and skills.
